Rekha was born in Chennai and her father Gemini Ganesan was a leadin Tamil actor, while her mther Pushpavali was an actress. She was never accepted by her father as she was born before the marriage of her parents. She did her schooling from Church Park Convent in Chennai, but dropped out at an early age to join the film industry.
Rekha made her career debut as a child artist in a 1966 Telugu movie called “Rangula Ratnam”, which went on to receive the National Film Award for Best feature Film in Telugu. She was just 12 years old at that time and was not at all interested in film acting, but was made to enter the industry. Her Hindi debut came in 1970 with “Sawan Bhadon”, which was a big hit, though Rekha was criticized for her dark complexion and overweight body. The actress was also not fluent in Hindi, but she rose up against all odds to emerge as one of the most glamorous actresses in the industry. She went on to do more than 180 films in the industry, improving with each performance and delivering some of the biggest hits with all the top actors of the industry. Her big hits include “Muqaddar ke Sikandar”, “Umrao Jaan”, ”Silsila”, “Khoobsurat”, “Basera”, “Anjaane”, “Basera” and the list is endless.
