The Indian Super League is the most watched football competition in the country. The 2014 campaign was the first for the Indian Super League. After seven seasons, the competition is now complete, while the upcoming Indian Super League season is also about to begin.
For obvious sponsorship reasons, the Indian Super League is commonly referred to as the Hero Indian Super League.
The Hero Indian Super League is managed by the All India Football Federation. Since the Asian Football Federation did not recognize the ISL until its fourth season, it had to go three years without any formal recognition.
When compared to the AFC Cup, only the ISL Trophy winner was allowed to compete. The League Champion’s Shield will make its debut in the upcoming season. Therefore, the League Winner’s Shield Awardee will be allowed to compete in the AFC Champions League.
Hyderabad FC defeated Kerala Blasters 2-1 in the final match of the eighth season of the (ISL) 2021-22.
The ISL championship match marked Hyderabad’s first participation while it was the third time KBFC had been to the final.
After an intense 1-1 draw, the game went to penalties, where Hyderabad prevailed 3-1 to claim the title.
There are now five clubs that have won the ISL trophy after Hyderabad’s triumph.

Hyderabad FC ISL winner of 2021-2022
Since their 2019 start in Indian Super League, Hyderabad FC has steadily improved, eventually winning the league championship in 2022.
The Nizams’ ability to score goals was a major factor in their championship season.
Bartholomew Ogbeche was an excellent acquisition from the Kerala Blasters by manager Manolo Marquez. As a result of his 18 strikes in 20 games, the Nigerian was named Golden Boot winner.
Hyderabad FC finished second in the league round and advanced to the playoffs for the first time after scoring 43 goals.
HFC overcame a 2-1 deficit from the first leg to defeat ATK Mohun 3-1 and go to the championship match with a 3-2 overall victory in the playoffs.
Both regular time & extra time were unable to separate Hyderabad FC as well as Kerala Blasters in the championship match, forcing a penalty shootout.
When Kerala’s Rahul KP put them ahead, Hyderabad’s Sahil Tavora tied the score and sent the game to penalties.
But it was keeper Laxmikant Kattimani who saved 3 penalties and helped lead Hyderabad to the first ISL championship.
Mumbai City FC ISL winner of 2020-2021
It was always the Islanders’ intention to win the ISL title in 2020–21, and with Manchester City owners City Football Group now holding a majority stake in Mumbai City FC, that goal is now more pronounced. Several famous players were assembled under the direction of ex FC Goa mentor Sergio Lobera like Bartholomew Ogbeche, Mourtada Fall, Hugo Boumous, and Adam Le Fondre
Mumbai City, a well-prepared team, swept the league to earn the League Winners Trophy and an automatic berth in the group stage of the AFC Champs League 2022.
While both ATK Mohun Bagan and Mumbai City FC scored 40 points at the end of the league phase, the former ultimately prevailed thanks to a better head-to-head record than the latter’s opponents, the Mariners. To do this, MCFC have to win their last league match against ATK Mohun Bagan.
Mumbai City FC faced FC Goa in the semi-finals. With a 2-2 first-leg tie and a scoreless second-leg tie, there was nothing to choose between the 2 teams at the conclusion of the two-game series. Mumbai City won the penalty shootout 6-5 and reached their first final in club history.
Their rematch with ATK Mohun Bagan in the championship game was inevitable. When Mumbai went behind early, a winning goal from Bipin Singh helped them to make a come back and win the match by a score of 2-1.
David Williams had given Kolkata the lead, but Tiri of ATK Mohun Bagan scored an own goal to draw Mumbai even.
ATK ISL Winner of 2019 to 2020
After two disappointing seasons in preparation for the 2019-20 Indian Super League season, Kolkata’s ATK returned to tried-and-true tactics and re-hired Antonio Lopez as head coach from Spain.
David Williams & Roy Krishna, both established goal scorers from the Australian A-League, were two of the first players signed by Habas to remedy the team’s problems. The strategy paid off handsomely as ATK went on a tear, winning Ten of their last 18 games while scoring 33 goals.
Although ATK lost the first leg of their semi-final match against Bengaluru FC by a score of 1-0, they were able to recover and go to the championship game with a victory at home.
The championship game was a nail-biter against Chennaiyin FC. However, ATK kept their cool and triumphed with a goal in stoppage time to take home the title. With three titles under their belt, ATK are the most successful team in the ISL’s history.
Bengaluru FC ISL winner of 2018-2019
To be sure, Bengaluru FC entered the 2018–19 seasons as one of the strongest teams the Indian Super League championship. The Sunil Chhetri-led squad was motivated to get past last year’s disappointing semifinal loss at their stadium.
And they achieved it with a resounding performance as Bengaluru FC topped the league stages under new coach Carles Cuadrat. Then, in the semifinals, they eliminated NorthEast United, who had no chance against a high-scoring FC Goa.
Many expected a flurry of goals in the final, but a corner kick scored by Bengaluru FC in the 117th minute proved to be the difference. The match took place at the Bombay Football Arena.
Chennaiyin FC ISL Winner of 2017-2018
In this year, ISL made its initial moves toward establishing itself as the top league in the country.
With the addition of Bengaluru FC & Jamshedpur FC and official recognition from (AFC), ISL clubs now have a greater incentive to compete: a playoff spot in the AFC Cup.
Chennaiyin FC, led by head coach John Gregory, put on a fantastic performance to capture their second ISL championship.
Ex Aston Villa manager Gregory, who is known for having his sides play the tried and true ‘long ball’ game, took a different approach with Chennaiyin FC, relying on the team’s strengths and frequently hitting the rivals on counters to achieve the goals.
With players like Jerry Lalrinzuala, Jeje Lalpekhluah, & Dhanpal Ganesh at the helm, Chennaiyin FC finished second to Bengaluru FC and advanced to the postseason.
Atletico de Kolkata ISL winner of 2016
During this time, the I-League (India’s primary football league) loaned out players to ISL teams for 2 month, so that the ISL could run as a one-time competition.
As a result of having Florent Malouda, the champion of the UEFA Champions League, Diego Forlán, the star of Uruguay, and John Arne Riise, a former player for Liverpool, in the tournament, there wasn’t shortage of glamour and glamour.
After leading Mumbai City FC towards the league title, Forlan saw his previous team, Manchester United, cruise through the playoffs and into the finals.
Chennaiyin FC, managed by Jose Francisco Molina, defeated Kerala Blasters in a thrilling penalty shootout to win the championship.
Chennaiyin FC ISL winner of 2015
After two years as an assistant coach with Chennaiyin FC, World Cup champion Marco Materazzi was promoted as head coach for the 2015 season.
Despite a difficult start to the Italian’s tenure, Chennaiyin FC finished the regular season with five consecutive victories and qualified for the playoffs.
When the competition was down, Chennaiyin FC made sure to keep their momentum going by defeating the league leaders Atletico de of Kolkata in the semi-finals and then prevailing over FC Goa with a late goal from the league’s Golden Boot winner, Stiven Mendoza.
Atletico de Kolkata ISL winner of 2014
The first season of the Indian Super League featured a who’s who of football stars like Alessandro Del Piero, Luis Garca, Robert Pires, & Freddie Ljungberg.
While Atletico de Kolkata advanced to the championship game thanks to a tenacious defensive effort and the tactical skill of coach Antonio Lopez Habas, Kerala Blasters FC were propelled to the championship game by the genius of Canadian forward Iain Hume.
The championship game was no different, as Atlético de Kolkata won thanks to an injury-time strike from Indian player Mohammed Rafique, who was widely considered an underdog entering the match.
