India Chase Down 406 Against West Indies as Shubman Gill Smashes Record Double Century in 2nd ODI

India produced one of the most extraordinary run chases in ODI history against West Indies in the second ODI at the Barsapara Cricket Stadium in Guwahati on September 30, 2026. Asked to chase a massive 406 after West Indies piled up 405 for 7, India answered with a fearless batting display led by captain Shubman Gill and Rohit Sharma.

Gill turned the chase into a record-breaking night by racing to a double century, while Rohit struck a superb 101 off 75 balls. Their 255-run opening partnership broke the back of a target that had looked almost unreachable. The result also gave India an unassailable 2-0 lead in the three-match ODI series.

West Indies Post Their First 400-Plus ODI Total

India won the toss and chose to bowl first, but West Indies quickly showed how good the Guwahati surface was for batting. Keacy Carty fell early, yet John Campbell and Shai Hope changed the tempo with a 110-run partnership for the second wicket.

Campbell attacked from the start and completed 101 from only 68 balls, hitting nine fours and five sixes. His century gave West Indies momentum and forced India’s bowlers onto the defensive.

After Campbell’s dismissal, Hope and Amir Jangoo produced the biggest partnership of the West Indies innings. They added 182 runs for the third wicket and kept the scoring rate above eight an over.

Hope made 104 from 94 balls and registered his 20th ODI century. Jangoo was even more aggressive, scoring 114 from 77 deliveries. For the first time in West Indies ODI history, three batters scored hundreds in the same innings.

Roston Chase then added an unbeaten 29 as West Indies reached 405 for 7 in 50 overs. It was their highest total in ODI cricket and their first score of 400 or more in the format.

Kuldeep Yadav Reaches 200 ODI Wickets

The Indian attack had a difficult afternoon on a flat batting surface. Kuldeep Yadav still managed to provide important breakthroughs and finished with 2 for 65 from his 10 overs. The left-arm wrist-spinner also completed 200 ODI wickets during the innings.

Gurnoor Brar and Ravindra Jadeja also picked up two wickets each. Debutant Auqib Nabi had a tough first international outing, conceding 84 runs from 8.5 overs without a wicket. Prasidh Krishna was unable to complete his spell after suffering an injury during the innings.

Rohit Sharma and Shubman Gill Make 406 Look Chasable

India needed a record chase, but Rohit Sharma and Gill refused to allow the required rate to become intimidating. Rohit immediately attacked the new ball and Gill soon joined him, giving India the kind of start required when chasing more than eight runs an over from the first delivery.

The pair reached 255 for the first wicket, turning the match completely. Rohit brought up his 35th ODI century from 72 balls and was eventually dismissed for 101 from 75 deliveries. His innings included 10 fours and six sixes.

Rohit Sharma Crosses 12,000 ODI Runs

Rohit’s century also carried major historical significance. During the innings, he crossed 12,000 runs in ODI cricket. He became the third Indian after Sachin Tendulkar and Virat Kohli to reach the landmark and the seventh men’s batter overall.

Even at 39, Rohit’s ability to dominate the powerplay remained decisive. Instead of merely giving India a start, he helped reduce a 406-run chase to a manageable equation before the halfway stage.

Shubman Gill Smashes Second ODI Double Century

Gill then took complete control of the chase. He reached his hundred from only 62 balls, the fastest ODI century by an Indian captain, and accelerated even further after the milestone.

His double century arrived from just 117 deliveries. It was the second ODI double hundred of his career, making him only the second batter after Rohit Sharma to record multiple ODI double centuries. Gill had previously scored 208 against New Zealand in Hyderabad in 2023.

The innings was also historic because Gill became the first Indian to score an ODI double century while chasing. Before this match, Glenn Maxwell’s unbeaten 201 against Afghanistan at the 2023 World Cup was the defining double hundred in a successful ODI chase.

Gill’s assault included 24 fours and seven sixes by the time he reached 200. He stayed at the crease deep into the chase as India moved beyond 400 with only two wickets down.

India Complete a Chase for the Record Books

Ruturaj Gaikwad joined Gill after the second wicket and played the supporting role India needed. With the required rate collapsing and wickets in hand, India finished the chase without allowing West Indies another route back into the contest.

The scale of the achievement was remarkable. Before this match, a 400-plus target had almost never been successfully chased in men’s ODI cricket. South Africa’s famous 438 for 9 against Australia’s 434 in Johannesburg in 2006 had long stood as the defining example. India’s response in Guwahati therefore joined a very small group of successful 400-plus chases.

Five Centuries Define a Remarkable ODI

The second ODI will be remembered as much for West Indies’ batting as for India’s chase. Campbell, Hope and Jangoo all reached three figures for the visitors. Rohit answered with a century of his own, while Gill went on to a double hundred.

West Indies did almost everything expected of a batting side after posting 405. Yet India produced an even greater batting performance. Rohit’s aggression removed the fear from the chase, while Gill turned a difficult target into a personal and team record night.

India Take 2-0 Lead in the Series

India had already won the first ODI in Thiruvananthapuram by eight wickets after centuries from Gill and Virat Kohli. The Guwahati victory gave the hosts a 2-0 lead and secured the three-match series with one game still to play.

The third and final ODI is scheduled for October 3 in New Chandigarh. For West Indies, the challenge will be to recover from the frustration of scoring 405 and still losing. For India, the biggest takeaway is the form of their top order, with Gill, Rohit and Kohli all producing major innings during the first two matches.
