5. Mohammed Ali Qamar
Mohammed Ali Qamar was the first Indian to win a gold in the Commonwealth Games in 2002. He hails from Kolkata and got into boxing at an early age. Mohammed Ali Qamar’s skills were first noticed in the 1999 World Amateur Boxing Championship which was held in Houston.
4. Jitender Kumar
Jitender Kumar is a flyweight boxer from India. He was born on 18th July 1988. He is known for winning a bronze medal at the Commonwealth games held in 2006. He was also part of the Indian contingent that was sent to the 2008 Beijing Olympics. Jitender lost in the quarter finals of the 2008 Olympics to Russian boxer Georgy Balakshin.
3. Akhil Kumar
Akhil Kumar is one of the most prominent boxers in India. He has received an Arjuna Award for his performance and achievement in international boxing. Akhil Kumar won a gold in the Commonwealth games in 2006. He also brought home a bronze during the 2008 Olympics.
2. Mary Kom
The only woman on our list, Mary Kom is also the only Indian woman to qualify for the 2012 Summer Olympics where she won a bronze. She was also the first Indian boxer to win a gold at the Asian Games in 2014. Mary’s journey was so inspirational, there was a movie based on her life called ‘Mary Kom‘.
1. Vijender Singh
Vijender Singh Beniwal is a professional boxer from India. He is currently the WBO Asia Pacific Super Middleweight champion. Vijender won the bronze medal at the 2006 Asian Games. He then won a bronze medal at the 2008 Beijing Olympics. He was also awarded the Rajiv Gandhi Khel Ratna Award and the Padma Shri award.
