Kiran Rao was born in Bangalore and hails from a royal family, with her paternal grandfather being the Raja of Wanaparthy. However, Kiran was raised in the city of Kolkata, where she pursued her schooling from Loreto House. Later in 1992, her parents moved to Mumbai, where she studied economics in Sophia College for Women. Kiran then went to Delhi for getting a Masters Degree from AJK Mass Communication Research Center at Jamia Millia Islamia. She is related to the young and sensational actress Aditi Rao Hydari from the maternal side of the family. Kiran’s marriage to Aamir Khan was a controversial one, because Aamir broke up with his wife Reena Dutta in 2002 after his affair with Kiran. They live in their Mumbai home and Kiran is known for her simple lifestyle, in which she follows a Vegan diet.
Kiran Rao’s entry in Bollywood was an impressive one, when she made her debut as an assistant director to Ashutosh Gowariker in the globally acclaimed film called “Lagaan”. This is where she met Aamir Khan and a relationship blossomed between the two of them. Aamir was the lead actor as well as the producer of the movie, which was nominated for the 74th Academy Awards in the category of best foreign language film. Later, Kiran assisted Ashutosh for his next venture too, which was the Shahrukh Khan starrer, “Swades: We, the People”, which came in 2004.
