Amrita Rao was born in Mumbai, but hails from a traditional Konkani family. Her father, Deepak Rao, runs an advertising agency in Mumbai, while her twin sister, Preetika Rao is also a successful model, columnist and actress in the South Indian film industry. Amrita did her schooling from Canossa Convent Girls School in Mumbai and pursued a degree in Psychology from the prestigious Sophia College of the city. Though her mother tongue is Konkani, she can speak Hindi, English and Marathi with equal ease.
Amrita Rao started her career as a model and did several commercials when she was in college. She was also seen in an Alisha Chinoy music video “Woh Pyar Mera” in 2002. The same year, she made her Bollywood debut with a Raj Kanwar film called “Ab Ke Baras”, in which she was paired opposite Arya Babbar, the son of Raj Babbar. The film was a moderate success, and Amrita got good review for her performance. She got her first hit in 2003, with the romantic movie “Ishq Vishk”, in which she co starred with the young heart throb Shahid Kapoor. She received Filmfare Award for Best Debut female along with the IIFA Award in the same category.
