Apple has officially launched the iPhone 18 Pro and iPhone 18 Pro Max, bringing some of the biggest upgrades yet to its premium iPhone range. Rather than completely changing the familiar Pro design, Apple has concentrated on areas that matter more in everyday use — performance, cameras, battery life, thermal management and artificial intelligence.
At the centre of both smartphones is the new A20 Pro chip, manufactured using a 2-nanometre process. Apple has also introduced a variable-aperture 48MP main camera for the first time on an iPhone, an upgraded 18MP Center Stage front camera, a smaller Dynamic Island, faster wired charging and the new Siri AI experience through iOS 27.
In India, the iPhone 18 Pro starts at ₹1,64,900, while the larger iPhone 18 Pro Max starts at ₹1,79,900. Pre-orders begin on September 12, 2026, with general availability from September 18.

New A20 Pro Chip Brings a Major Performance Upgrade
One of the most important changes in the iPhone 18 Pro series is the A20 Pro processor. Built using a new 2nm manufacturing process, the chip combines a six-core CPU with a seven-core GPU containing Neural Accelerators.
Apple has also introduced a Dual 16-core Neural Engine, giving the phones 32 Neural Engine cores for demanding on-device AI processing. According to Apple, the A20 Pro offers 50% more memory bandwidth than the A19 Pro, while its new GPU can deliver up to 40% higher graphics performance.
The extra processing power should particularly benefit demanding games, professional photo and video workflows, computational photography and Apple Intelligence features.
Apple has also redesigned how the chip and memory are packaged. The layout is inspired by the company’s M-series processors and improves the transfer of heat away from the processor.
Bigger Vapor Chamber Improves Sustained Performance
Powerful processors can lose performance when a smartphone becomes too hot during gaming, video editing or other demanding work. Apple has addressed this with a redesigned next-generation vapor chamber.
Its surface area is around three times larger than the previous generation. Combined with improvements to the A20 Pro packaging and more thermally conductive materials, Apple claims up to 40% better sustained performance compared with the iPhone 17 Pro.
This means the improvement is not simply about achieving a high benchmark score for a few seconds. The phones are designed to maintain stronger performance during longer gaming sessions, professional video work and demanding AI tasks.
Familiar Pro Design with Four Colour Options
Apple has retained an aluminium unibody construction for the iPhone 18 Pro family. Both phones use Ceramic Shield 2 on the front along with Ceramic Shield glass on the back.
There are four colour choices:
- Black
- Silver
- Glacier
- Burgundy
Burgundy is the notable new finish for this generation, while Apple has used colour-matched rear glass to create a more uniform appearance.
The iPhone 18 Pro weighs 211 grams, while the larger Pro Max weighs 249 grams. Both models are rated IP68 for dust and water resistance, including resistance at a maximum depth of six metres for up to 30 minutes under laboratory conditions.
6.3-inch and 6.9-inch Super Retina XDR Displays
Apple continues to offer the Pro models in two sizes.
The iPhone 18 Pro has a 6.3-inch Super Retina XDR OLED display with a resolution of 2622 × 1206 pixels. The iPhone 18 Pro Max gets a 6.9-inch display with a 2868 × 1320 resolution.
Both panels include ProMotion technology with an adaptive refresh rate of up to 120Hz, an Always-On display, HDR, True Tone and wide P3 colour support.
Outdoor peak brightness reaches 3,000 nits, which should make the displays easier to read in bright sunlight. Apple has also added an anti-reflective coating.
Smaller Dynamic Island Can Show More Information
The Dynamic Island remains on the iPhone 18 Pro series, but Apple has reduced its size and made better use of the surrounding display area.
The redesigned Dynamic Island can now display up to three Live Activities at the same time. Users could, for example, monitor navigation, music and a live sports update without repeatedly opening separate apps.
Face ID continues to be used for device unlocking, authentication and payments.
48MP Main Camera Gets Variable Aperture
The camera is arguably the most interesting hardware upgrade this year.
Both iPhone 18 Pro models use a 48MP Fusion Main camera featuring a real variable-aperture mechanism. Instead of being permanently restricted to one aperture, the camera can adjust according to available light and the required depth of field.
Four aperture settings are available:
f/1.48, f/1.8, f/2.8 and f/4.0.
The widest f/1.48 setting allows more light to reach the sensor and is particularly useful for night and indoor photography. Narrower apertures can increase depth of field, helping keep more people or objects in focus.
Apple uses six laser-cut aperture blades and also allows professional users to manually select an aperture through the Camera app.
Three 48MP Rear Cameras
Apple has equipped the iPhone 18 Pro and Pro Max with a complete 48MP Pro Fusion camera system.
The setup consists of a 48MP Fusion Main camera, a 48MP Fusion Ultra Wide camera and a 48MP Fusion Telephoto camera.
The 48MP Ultra Wide has a 13mm equivalent focal length and 120-degree field of view, while the telephoto camera provides a 100mm equivalent 4x optical view. Apple also offers an 8x optical-quality zoom option at 200mm equivalent, while digital zoom reaches up to 24x.
The main camera can additionally provide a 2x optical-quality view, giving photographers several useful focal lengths without constantly changing lenses.
Pro Camera Controls Offer More Manual Freedom
Apple is giving experienced photographers more control directly inside its standard Camera app.
The new Pro controls allow manual adjustment of settings including aperture, shutter speed and white balance. A histogram can also be displayed to help judge exposure.
Photographic Styles 3 introduces additional texture and grain adjustments, while Apple’s updated computational photography pipeline is designed to preserve more detail.
These additions make the iPhone 18 Pro considerably more flexible for users who prefer controlling a photograph rather than relying completely on automatic processing.
18MP Center Stage Front Camera
The Pro models also receive an upgraded 18MP Center Stage front camera with an f/1.9 aperture and autofocus.
Center Stage can automatically adjust framing for photos and video calls, while users can tap to zoom and rotate the framing. The camera also supports ultra-stabilised video and Dual Capture.
Dual Capture allows video to be recorded using the front and rear cameras simultaneously, which could be useful for travel videos, interviews, events and social-media content.
Stronger Professional Video Features
Apple continues to position its Pro iPhones as serious filmmaking tools.
The iPhone 18 Pro series supports 4K Dolby Vision video at up to 120fps using the main camera, along with ProRes recording, ProRes RAW, Apple Log 2 and genlock support.
Cinematic effects can also be applied after recording compatible footage, while 4K Dolby Vision is now supported in Time-lapse mode.
Audio Mix has been improved as well, including better separation of voices, music and unwanted background sound. Four studio-quality microphones are included.
Apple Reference Image Focuses on Photo Authenticity
With manipulated and AI-generated images becoming more common, Apple has introduced an interesting feature called Apple Reference Image.
When Reference mode is used, signed sensor information is captured to create a reference version representing what the camera originally saw. It can later be compared with an edited photograph to help determine whether changes have been made.
Apple is also adding support for metadata and technologies such as SynthID to help identify AI-generated or AI-edited images. The feature could be particularly useful to photographers and photojournalists who need to establish image authenticity.
Siri AI and Apple Intelligence with iOS 27
The iPhone 18 Pro and Pro Max ship with iOS 27 and are designed around the next generation of Apple Intelligence.
A major part of this is Siri AI, Apple’s more conversational and context-aware version of Siri. Apple says Siri AI can understand personal context across information such as messages, photos and emails and can take actions based on what is visible on the screen.
Users can also interact with Siri through the Camera app to ask about objects or information in front of them.
Apple says much of the processing is handled directly on the device, while more demanding requests can use Private Cloud Compute. Siri AI is initially rolling out in English, and individual features can vary by language and region.
Battery Life Gets a Significant Upgrade
Battery life has also improved.
Apple rates the iPhone 18 Pro for up to 34 hours of video playback and up to 31 hours of streamed video playback.
The iPhone 18 Pro Max increases this to 43 hours of video playback and 38 hours of streamed playback. Apple rates the Pro Max for up to 29 hours of typical use per charge.
Battery figures can vary by market because eSIM-only versions sold in certain countries use the space normally occupied by a physical SIM slot for a larger battery.
Faster Wired and MagSafe Charging
Charging speed has improved considerably.
With a compatible 60W or higher USB-C power adapter, Apple says either phone can reach around 50% charge in approximately 15 minutes.
Wireless charging is supported at up to 25W through MagSafe. Qi2 wireless charging also reaches up to 25W when compatible equipment is used.
As before, the charging adapter is sold separately.
C2 Modem, Wi-Fi 7 and Bluetooth 6
Connectivity has received its own hardware upgrades.
The iPhone 18 Pro family uses Apple’s new C2 cellular modem, designed to improve connection reliability and efficiency. Apple says C2 can provide meaningfully faster upload performance than the previous C1X modem while consuming less power.
An Apple-designed N1 wireless networking chip handles Wi-Fi 7, Bluetooth 6 and Thread connectivity.
Other connectivity features include 5G, NFC, the second-generation Ultra Wideband chip and precision dual-frequency GPS with support for systems including India’s NavIC.
The USB-C port supports USB 3 data speeds of up to 10Gbps and DisplayPort video output.
iPhone 18 Pro and Pro Max Storage Options
Apple offers both devices with four storage capacities:
256GB, 512GB, 1TB and 2TB.
The addition of storage up to 2TB should particularly appeal to photographers, filmmakers and creators working with high-resolution ProRAW and ProRes files.
iPhone 18 Pro and iPhone 18 Pro Max Price in India
Apple’s official India pricing is as follows:
| Storage | iPhone 18 Pro | iPhone 18 Pro Max |
| 256GB | ₹1,64,900 | ₹1,79,900 |
| 512GB | ₹1,89,900 | ₹2,04,900 |
| 1TB | ₹2,39,900 | ₹2,54,900 |
| 2TB | ₹3,14,900 | ₹3,29,900 |
The Pro Max therefore carries a ₹15,000 premium over the equivalent iPhone 18 Pro storage configuration.
Pre-Order and Sale Date in India
Pre-orders for the iPhone 18 Pro and iPhone 18 Pro Max begin in India at 5:30 PM IST on September 12, 2026.
Both phones will become available for purchase from September 18, 2026.
Apple is selling the devices through its online and physical stores as well as authorised retail partners.
Which One Should You Choose?
The core experience is remarkably similar on both models. Both get the A20 Pro chip, the same triple-48MP rear camera system, variable aperture, 18MP front camera, ProMotion display, Siri AI and the same storage options.
The decision mainly comes down to size, battery life and price.
The iPhone 18 Pro is better suited to buyers who want flagship performance in a smaller 6.3-inch phone. The iPhone 18 Pro Max makes more sense for people who prefer a large 6.9-inch display and want the longest possible battery life.
Final Thoughts
The iPhone 18 Pro generation is less about changing how an iPhone looks and more about upgrading what happens inside it. The 2nm A20 Pro chip, variable-aperture main camera, three 48MP rear cameras, improved cooling, longer battery life and expanded professional camera controls are the main reasons this generation stands apart.
Apple is also making AI a much more central part of the iPhone experience through Siri AI and Apple Intelligence. With prices beginning at ₹1,64,900 in India, these remain firmly premium smartphones, but the hardware upgrades are meaningful, particularly for photographers, video creators, gamers and users who keep an iPhone for several years.
