Is Fossil a Luxury Brand?

No, Fossil is not a luxury brand. And why do we say that? Fossil’s Journey So Far

Fossil began its journey in 1984 when it was established by Tom Kartsotis in Texas, USA. His sibling had the concept of bringing timepieces from the Asian market and retailing them at affordable prices. At first, they were known as Overseas Products International. The old-fashioned style of their first timepieces, which was derived from the advertisement of the 1930s-1950s, fascinated people very quickly.

Back in 1990, Fossil had expanded its product line to include leather goods like bags and belts, and made a subsidiary brand called Relic. Three years later, the company’s being put on the stock exchange was a green signal for larger expansion. The company has been taking over different watch brands throughout the years; first, they bought Zodiac in 2001 to get the Swiss-style watches, after that, in 2004, they acquired Michele Watch for luxury watches, and finally, in 2012, they took over Skagen for simple and contemporary designs. Besides that, in 2015, they took over Misfit to get access to the smartwatch technology.

Where Fossil Fits

Fossil chooses to market itself more as a fashion label than a luxury one. The main emphasis of the company is on fashionable, practical, and reasonably priced products targeting the youth of the consumer market. The majority of Fossil timepieces are fabricated with stainless steel and leather materials, with a few hybrids that blend traditional aesthetics with simple technology.

While luxury brands are the opposite, Fossil products are mass-produced and designed with the typical consumer in mind. Moreover, they are not made of precious materials such as gold or diamonds. That alone makes it a kinda normal range brand. As a result, Fossil is attractive to style-savvy customers who desire good design at a fair price rather than those who are strictly fixated on the one-of-a-kind or the social status aspect of the brand.
