BLDC Vs Normal Fan: Which Is Better?

Santosh, January 30, 2024January 28, 2024

When buying a fan for whatever reason, you might have thought of the BLDC fans, right? But what exactly are these fans? And are they any better than the normal fans aka traditional ones or is it just a hoax or anything like that? Well, if that’s what you are wondering about right now, then you should keep on reading today’s post because here we will be comparing these two and will tell you which one of these types is actually better, you know? So yeah, here we go.

What Are These BLDC and Normal Fans Anyway?

Ceiling Fan

First of all, you see, BLDC fans are all about using a brushless direct current motor, pretty high-tech, right? What makes them stand out is how efficient and long-lasting they are. No brushes in these motors mean less wear and tear, which translates to you not having to bother about replacing them often. It’s a win-win for longevity and hassle-free maintenance. Now, flipping over to the traditional side of things, we’ve got our good old normal fans. These ones have been around forever, using an induction motor with brushes. They’re reliable and simple, found just about everywhere. But, let’s be real, they’re kind of the noisy ones as well, and they don’t exactly go easy on the energy use, all thanks to those friction-causing brushes.

1. Power Consumption

One of the major differences between BLDC and normal fans is actually in terms of the power consumption factor. You see, BLDC fans are marketed as the better and more efficient versions of the normal fans. This means that BLDC fans consume less electricity overall, but how low is it actually? Well, we are talking about anywhere between 30 to 35 watts per hour. On the other hand, though, the normal fans actually consume almost or more than double that, like 70 to 80 watts per hour. And this significant difference becomes even more significant in the long run. That’s the reason why so many people choose BLDC fans over the normal ones because they are much more cost-effective.

2. Performance and Efficiency

Again, when we talk about the performance factor between these two fan types, you’ll see BLDC fans winning at it pretty easily. And as you can already tell, more performance means powerful airflow and better efficiency across various speeds, you know? On the other hand, talking about a normal fan, you don’t get as much performance as you can expect from a BLDC one, and that simply results in poor airflow in the room or specific area. That’s why many people say that no matter whether it is just a mildly warm day or a hot summer afternoon if you have a BLDC fan fit in your room, you can easily rely on it to provide you with good cooling overall.

3. Noise Level

Noise level is by far the biggest factor why so many people just avoid getting a normal aka traditional fan. Like really, if you were sitting there in a room that has a normal fan installed, and you are trying to study or do some work that requires consultation, then you’ll know how hard it becomes with the greater noise levels of a normal fan. On the other hand, despite having more performance, BLDC fans are actually known for their quieter operation, and that is why they are preferred over normal fans. And the secret behind BLDC fans being less noisy is that they don’t have brushes in the motor, unlike the normal fans. This is the reason why the BLDC ones don’t create that humming sound, especially when running at a higher speed.

4. Durability and Maintenance

Again, in the durability department, a BLDC fan is way better than a traditional or normal fan. As we already mentioned earlier, BLDC fans have the brushless technology, and that ultimately results in not only better performance but better longevity as well. And because of the absence of the brushes, BLDC fans have a generally longer lifespan, usually longer than a normal fan, you know? If you were to buy a normal fan in today’s time, you’d see yourself frequently doing the maintenance of these fans, and they also require replacements of parts at times too, that’s kinda a headache.

5. Cost Analysis

Sure, since BLDC fans are way better in every aspect compared to the normal fans, that’s why it is pretty understandable why they have higher prices, you know? That brushless technology, better performance, better build quality, and all that stuff comes at a price, right? And don’t think like you are paying way more for a BLDC fan compared to a normal one, instead, you should be thinking long term. You see, a BLDC fan will save you a ton more compared to a normal fan, in terms of those electricity bills, maintenance costs, and things like that.

Conclusion

All in all, a BLDC fan is a much better option compared to a normal fan. But still, if you can’t invest in a highly-priced BLDC fan right now, then you can definitely go with a normal fan, there is nothing wrong with that.
