India became independent on 15th August 1947 and for the Independence a lot of people sacrificed their lives. The list of names can be never ending, but there are a few people who played a major role during the Independence and they should be remembered for that. The country we live in today could have been a lot different if it wasn’t for them. There are many people who started their fight for freedom. Marutha Pandiyar born on 15 December 1748 was the first person to issue a proclamation of independence from the colonial rule of the British and since then things started changing. 10. Gopal Krishna Gokhale
Born in the year 1886, Gopal Krishna Gokhale played a major role in the movement. E was also the senior leader of the INC and also founded the Servants of the Indian Society group. He took up the issues like untouchability and discrimination and fought bravely against the British Government.
9. Bahadur Shah Zafar
He was the last Mughal Emperor and he was a great freedom fighter who fought bravely for the country and he was also involved in the Indian Rebellion of 1857. He led his army against the East India Company and due to his activities he was given an exile in Rangoon.

She was a British Activist, a well-read woman, who later became a member of the Indian National Congress. She took up the issues like women empowerment, lectured the women to come out of the house and fight for independence and also taught them to read and write. He was the first Prime Minister of the Independent India and was on the main person who played a major role in the freedom fight. He followed the path of Gandhi Ji and he also took part in the non-cooperation movement and quit Indian Movement.

He was one of the most prominent leaders of the INC, and played a great role in the freedom struggle. He was also a follower of Mahatma Gandhi and believed in satyagrah and non-violent ways. He took an active part in the Civil Disobedience Movement and the Quit India Movement.
5. Mangal Pandey
Mangal Pandey was the first freedom fighter of the country, who fought against the British Government. He revolted against them in the 1857, revolted against the greased cartridges and played a great role in the Barrack pore Unrest.
4. Chandrashekhar Azad
He was the man with the plan and his only plan was to free India from the British rule. He played a major role in freedom fight. He was the person behind the Kakori Case, and Bhagat Singh and he worked hand in hand.

2. Bhagat Singh
