4 Star Vs 5 Star AC Power Consumption in India

Santosh, March 17, 2023March 18, 2023

In the peak summer days, what is better than just lounging around in your house, and enjoying your time? Well, it is quite hard to say No to that. But enjoying an afternoon on a summer day is only possible if you have a large pool in your backyard, or you have air conditioning facilities. Right? Therefore, it should be no surprise to you at this point if we were to tell you that AC sales dramatically increase during the summers. And when buying an AC, many people get confused about how much tonnage they go for, which type of AC would be perfect for them, etc. The same goes for when it comes to the Energy Efficiency Ratings of these appliances. And if you are also feeling confused about whether you should buy a 4-Star or a 5-Star AC, then don’t you worry now, we are here to help you out with that. Here, we’ll break down the actual difference in the power consumption of both ACs. So stick to this post till the end to find out more.

What Are Star Ratings Aka EER?

Before we talk about the power consumption aspect of both 4 Star and 5 Star ACs, you must understand what these ratings actually mean or refer to. The Bureau of Energy Efficiency (BEE) is a government body in India that assigns these ratings to various appliances based on energy efficiency. This means that EER actually stands for Energy Efficiency Rating, and always keep in mind that the higher this rating is, the more energy efficient an appliance will be.

However, when it comes to the energy efficiency of appliances, especially ACs, the output may vary depending on some other factors. For example, AC’s performance or energy efficiency may vary with a noticeable difference because of factors like cooling area, setting of the AC, outside temperature, etc. Therefore it is important to keep in mind that BEE assigns energy efficiency ratings when the appliances are tested under ideal conditions.

Energy Efficiency and Power Consumption

Now it is time we get down to the actual power consumption difference between 4-star and 5-star AC. For the sake of today’s post and power consumption comparison, we have included the data about the Split ACs rather than Window ACs. Below you’ll find a table, in which we have mentioned the power consumption of both the ACs, and we have included the same tonnage of Split ACs.

AC RatingCooling Capacity (Ton)EERPower Consumption (Units/Hour)Monthly Power Consumption (10h/Day)
4-Star1.53.91.05315
5-Star1.54.50.89 unit267

As you can see the overall difference in the electricity units consumed by both the ACs per hour as well as on a monthly basis. On peak summer days, people use air conditioners for an average of 10 hours per day. Therefore, based on the data in the table given above, you can easily formulate how much electricity bill you’ll have to bear when running one of these ACs.

Let’s go even further to calculate the actual electricity bill amount in rupees. As of now, the per electricity unit rate is around 6.15 rupees across most of the states in the country. That means, if you run a 4-Star Split AC for 10 hours a day, a whole month, then an additional Rs. 1,937 (315×6.15) will reflect in your electricity bill. On the other hand, a 5-Star Split AC would only cost RS. 1,642 monthly.

Verdict

As you can see, when we actually calculate the monthly expense of running both 4-Star and 5-Star ACs, there is a noticeable difference. However, keep in mind that a 5-Star AC would cost you more than a 4-Star AC upfront. The power consumption difference in both the ACs may not be as significant for some of you but, when you are running 4 or 5 of these ACs, it’ll surely be a pretty significant difference. To sum it all up, we’d say that if you are buying just one AC but the 5-Star AC is costing way too much upfront, in that case, you can definitely choose a 4-Star AC, even a 3-Star one.
