10 Best Bollywood Movies based on Novels


Indian film industry commonly known as Bollywood releases more than 300 movies per year. Each movie has its own concept and category. Similarly, every movie is either having the original story line or inspired from some other film industry. It is the general notion that movies being inspired from Hollywood, Tollywood etc. One more option where movies can be inspired i.e. books/novels.   There are various movies based on novels released every year. It is very difficult to list the top 10 in this category.

Following is the list of top 10 best Bollywood movies inspired by books and novels.

10. Guide

The tenth movie in this list is Guide released in the year 1965. It was based on famous novel of named The Guide written by R K Narayan. Dev Anand and Waheeda Rehman were in the lead roles and showed remarkable award-winning performance in this movie. The end of the novel and movie were different to make the movie more interesting.

9. Tere Mere Sapne

The subsequent movie in the novel based list is Tere Mere Sapne. This movie was released in the year 1971. It was based on the novel The Citadel written by A J Cronin. Dev Anand and Mumtaz were in the lead roles and showed outstanding performance in this movie. It was made in Bengali in 1972 and later in 1982, it was again remade into the Telugu language named Madhura Swapnam.

8. Devdas

Devdas is a Bollywood movie based on famous Bengali romantic novel Devdas written by Sarat Chandra Chattopadhyay. Shahrukh Khan, Madhuri Dixit and Aishwarya Rai were in the lead roles. It was directed by Sanjay LeelaBhansali.

3 Idiots

The seventh movie in this category is 3 Idiots which was released in the year 2009. It was based on famous novel Five Point Someone written by Chetan Bhagat. Aamir Khan, KareenaKapoor, Sharman Joshi, R Madhavan and BomanIrani were in the lead roles. It broke all the previous box office records and become the super-duper hit at that time.

6. Saawariya

Saawariya is the next Bollywood movie in this category. It was released in the year 2007 starring RanbirKapoor and SonamKapoor. It was directed by Sanjay LeelaBhansali. It was based on Novel Fyodor Dostoevsky’s Short Story White Nights. It was the debut movie for Ranbir and SonamKapoor.
