Gujrat is located in the western part of the country and has an exotic culture. The heritage of Gujarat date makes to multiple centuries, and it was also known as the home of Lord Krishna. Traditional Dress of Men in Gujarat

  • Chorn – During the festival season, you will see men wearing chorn in Gujarat. These are colourful cotton pants that are stitched to resemble a dhoti. These pants are perfect for Gujarat’s hot climate, making it easy for men to move around.
  • Dhoti – Some men prefer wearing Dhoti instead of the Chorn, and the Dhoti in Gujarat are also very colourful. You will notice the men wrap around the piece of cloth through the waist and tuck it inside through the legs. Dhotis are worn on regular days and during festivals.
  • Kediyu – Chorn is paired up with Kediyu, and it is the top portion of the dress. The Kediyu resembles a fusion of a shirt and a frock. The Kediyu is available in many colourful patterns, and it is primarily worn during local events or festivals.
  • Phento – Phento is the headgear that Gujarati men wear. The Phento is like a Rajasthani pagri, and it is made by wrapping layers of cloth around the head. The Phentos are also very colourful.
  • Kurta – Lastly, Kurtas are also very popular among Gujarati men, usually worn during daily life.

Traditional Dress of Women in Gujarat

  • Ghagra Choli – Ghagras are made out of colourful fabric and are the most popular ethnic wear in the state. The Ghagra also has a lot of mirror work along with ethnic designs. Women usually take a chunni or an odhni along with the Ghagra. The Ghagra is worn with a Choli which is a blouse with extensive embroidery work.
  • Chaniyo – Many people confuse lehenga and Chaniyo, but both are different. Chaniyo is a traditional skirt which is designed with colourful fabric. It usually has thick borders and is very popular for mirror and thread work. Usually, women will pair the Chaniyo with a bright top.
  • Chunni – Chunni is worn in most of the states in India and is also part of traditional attire in Gujarat. The Chunni is made of colourful patterns and designs. They are matched with the designs of lehenga or any other dress the women wear. In villages, the women would use the Chunni to cover their heads.
  • Saree – Sarees are also very popular in Gujarat, and you will notice many women wearing Sarees. This colour and the fabric would change depending on the season. Saree is usually worn with a blouse and a petticoat.
  • Accessories – The common accessories worn by Gujarati women includes mangal sutra, bindi, bangles, earring, necklace, nose ring, baali and naths. The married women also wear bindis and Sindoor. Apart from this, gold and diamond jewellery is an integral part of Gujarati culture.

Wedding Dresses in Gujarat

Just like in any other part of the country, weddings in Gujarat are at a grand scale. The dresses for the wedding are a lot richer and heavier than the regular traditional dresses. For the grooms, the popular dress during the wedding is a designer kurta with zari work or heavy embroidery. The groom also wears a dhoti matching the Kurta, and a headgear compliments the dress. At the same time, the women prefer a saree with embroidery and silk work or a lehenga choli during weddings. Red is the favourite colour of Gujarati women during such ceremonies.
