List of Foods You Should Not Refrigerate and Why

These days with our hectic schedules storing for groceries has become inevitable part of life and refrigerator plays most important role in kitchen for extending shelf life our favorite food items. The cold temperature of refrigerator keeps food items fresh for longer time and prevents item from perishing. With this thought refrigerators are filled to the brims and many a times it is assumed as storage option. There are more than dozen of items which should not go in this cold storage box.

List for the item which should never be refrigerated

Potatoes: Cold temperatures convert starch into sugar much sooner than warm ones. So Potatoes are best when stored at room temperature. They should be placed in Cool and dry places but not in Cold!

Bananas: Bananas need room temperature to ripen it if it is bought unripe.The cold temperature can actually have the reverse effect by turning them black quicker whereas light and air slowdowns its decay process.

Avocados: Ripening process of avocados is delayed when stored in refrigerators. The best place is storing them on kitchen counters.

Tomatoes: In most of the houses, Tomatoes find place in refrigerator but actually it should be placed on countertops. The cold temperature messes with the texture of this red delicious fruit.

Whole Melons: Like Bananas, Watermelons, Cantaloupes should be stored in Cool and dry places. The cold temperature speed up the rotting process of these summer fruits.

Garlic: Fridge has cold and moist air , if the Garlic goes in the refrigerator it might sprout and develop mold on the skin. Garlic are best when stored in dry places.

Onions: Onions are not stored in cold temperatures. They need dry and clear air for longer shelf life

Cucumbers: Skin of cucumbers wither first when stored in Cold temperature making its shelf life even shorter.

Peppers: Cold temperature can make bell peppers lose its crispiness. It is applicable for all colors of bell peppers green, red, and orange.

Apples: Apples are loved when they are crisped and flavorful. Refrigerating the apples definitely make them lose its crispiness.

Apricots, Kiwis, Peaches, Mangoes: Fruits with hard seeds need fresh air and light to ripen as these fruits are loved the most when they are sweet and juicy. Storing fridge make these items develop crystals which can accelerate decaying of these items.

Mint: Most of us place Mint in refrigerators but Mint do well at room temperature. If mint stems are trimmed and place in pot of cold water it will do even better.

Sweet Potatoes: Just like Potatoes, cold temperatures convert starch into sugar much sooner than warm ones. They can develop spuds if kept in fridge.

Basil: Basil is delicate herb if not stored properly it will wilt soon. Storing in cold temperature might cause black spots occurring on leaves.

Coffee: Coffee should be stored in air tight container in pantry shelf. If it goes in refrigerator it might lose its essence and catch smell of some other foods stored in refrigerator.

Oils:  Fats in all the oils olive oil , Vegetable oil, Coconut oil , and other cooking oils solidify in Cold temperature making it not an ideal option to consume as it loses its texture.

Honey: Honey can last for decades if stored in Cool and dry places. The cold temperature of fridge crystallizes honey and texture surely goes on a toss.

Cereals: Cereals need no refrigeration as it can be easily stored in airtight containers in pantry. Storing in fridge can make it absorb some moisture and smell of other foods.

Dried Beans: Dried beans placed in refrigerator can make it sprout due to the moist air n fridge and also it can lose its flavor.

Jams and Jelly: Jams and Jelly have plenty of sugar which act as preservative. So jam and jelly can definitely give miss to refrigerators.

Vinegar: Storing Vinegar in refrigerator make it lose its flavor even if its shelf life is increased.

Hot Sauces: There is plenty of vinegars in these sauces and heat of the pepper is more potent in the room temperature.

Ketchup: Most of us place Ketchup in refrigerator but vinegar in Ketchup will react badly with the cold temperature. Ketchup can give a miss to fridge.

Mustards : Just like ketchup , mustard can go in pantry shelf. Storing in cold temperature can increase the acidity levels over the period of time.

Bread: Cold temperature in fridge can make bread go dry making it stale. Bread should be stored in cool and dry place

Nuts: Storing nuts in fridge can make it attract some lurking smells from the fridge and even nutty flavor of nuts can be compromised.
