Jimmy Shergill hails from a Punjabi Sikh family and was born in Gorakhpur, Uttar Pradesh. He is the son of a painter, Satyajit Singh Shergill, while his aunt Amrita Shergill is another renowned painter. After completing his college education from Lucknow, Jimmy moved to Punjab to look after his ancestral property and it was when he went to Punnjabi University in Patiala to complete his studied, but fate had something else in store for him. Soon, he decided to move to Mumbai, the city of dreams and went on to become a well known actor in the industry. He is married to Priyanka Puri, a Delhi based girl, who has also won some beauty pageants.
After an initial struggle, Jimmy Shergill started his film career with “Macchis” in 1996 and this movie was based on terrorism in Punjab, made by the noted writer Gulzar. The role was small, yet impressive and Jimmy got the opportunity to showcase his talent, doing full justice to the character of Jaimal in the movie. Jimmy earned good reviews for the film and became a recognized face in the industry. Next came, the big hit from the prestigious Yash Raj banner, “Mohabbatein”. The movie had a big star cast, including heavy weights like Amitabh Bachchan, Shahrukh Khan and Aishwarya Rai, but Jimmy was still able to mark his presence in this multi starrer film. After this, there was no looking back for Jimmy and he delivered excellent performances in several Hindi movies like “Mere Yaar Ki Shaadi Hai”, “A Wednesday”, “Special 26”, “Munna Bhai MBBS”, “Lage Raho Munna Bhai”, “Saheb Bibi Aur Gangster” and “My Name is Khan”.
