Dharmendra was born in a Sikh family in Phagwara village in Punjab, though he now owns a residence in another Punjab village called Sahnewal. His father was a head master in the village school and he received his primary and intermediate education in the village, though his dreams later took him to the city of Bombay. He married Prakash Kaur in 1954, when he was just 19 years old, but again fell in love with Hema Malini while shooting for “Sholay”. He caused quite a stir by marrying her in 1980, and having his first family at the same time, but things slowly settled down. His children, Sunny Deol and Bobby Deol (from first wife) are noted actors, while Esha and Ahana (from the second wife) are actress and classical dancer, respectively. Dharmendra made his Bollywood debut in 1960 with “Dil Bhi Tera Hum Bhi Tere”, but his first commercial success in the lead role came in “Phool Aur Patthar”, which released in 1966. “Mera Gaon Mera Desh” (1971) established Dharmendra as an action star. He acted in a number of movies including “Haqeeqat”, “Anpadh”, “Aayee Milan Ki Bela”, “Loafer”, “Chupke Chupke”, “ Dillagi”, “Charas”, “Naukar Biwi Ka”, “Jugnu” and “Dharam Veer”, to name just a few.
