How to get a Marriage Certificate (Rules and Procedures)

Marriage Certificate is the official certificate issued by the state after the marriage of two people. There are many organization which demands the marriage certificates as a proof of marriage to provide benefits to the people. Even the government may seek a marriage certificate to issue a passport and other such documents.

The marriage certificate can be obtained under the Hindu Marriage Act of 1955 or under the Special Marriage Act of 1954. At present, it is mandatory to register the marriage and this rule was implemented in 2006 by the Supreme Court. The marriage certificate can offer other benefits to the people as well. This helps in a change of name after marriage and along with that, a marriage certificate is also required for the visa process.

Documents Required for Getting Marriage Certificate

Before we talk about the documents required to get the marriage certificate, we would like to tell you that there is a restriction on age. The couple should be of legal marriageable age to get married. To be more specific, the groom must be at least 21 years old and the bridge must be at least 18 years old.

Apart from that, there are other documents required to get the marriage registered, these documents can be classified into three categories and below are the details

Marriage Proof

  • Wedding Invitation
  • Temple Marriage Receipt
  • Any Other Proof of Marriage

Apart from these documents, you would also need the 4 passport size photos of groom and bridge for the marriage registration form.

Process to get Marriage Certificate

To obtain the marriage certificate, follow the process listed below

  • Visit the state website of your state and you can find the state website by searching the same on google.
  • Login to your account on the website and if you have not already created an account then go ahead and create an account. This is required for the online
  • Now, navigate to Online Services and Click on marriage Certificate. Once that is done, you will notice a marriage registration form that needs to be filled by you.
  • Enter all the details and upload the documents required to get the marriage certificate. Once that is done, you will then have to select the date of appointment to go ahead with the registration.
  • Submit the application form and obtain a print out of the application form. Once that is done, you will have to visit the marriage registrar office to get the marriage registered and obtain the marriage certificate. It should be noted that you must visit the officer as per your appointment.

Another point to take care of is that you would need to have two witnesses with you while getting the marriage registered. The witness must have a valid address proof along with the ID Proof to help you with the registration.

If your state doesn’t support online procedure then you can go ahead and register for the marriage by visiting the district office directly with the required documents and witness.
