Ban in India
Snack Video was banned by the Government of India on 24th November 2020. It was among the 43 Chinese apps blocked by the Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology, under Section 69A of the Information Technology Act, 2000. Following the ban on TikTok in India, Snack Video had emerged as its popular alternative. The app was witnessing a surge in downloads in India, when it was blocked by the government.
The decision to ban Snack Video and 42 other Chinese apps was taken in response to reports received by the Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology from the Indian Cyber Crime Coordination Centre under the Ministry of Home Affairs. According to the Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology, a ban was imposed on 43 Chinese apps on the basis of inputs which revealed that these apps were engaging in activities that were prejudicial to sovereignty and integrity of India, defence of India, security of state and public order.
In case of Snack Video, reports highlighting the platform’s links to a previously banned Chinese app, Kwai, and the possibility of data harvesting and rebranding to circumvent the ban, may have played also a role in spurring the GOI to block its access in the country.
Snack Video and 42 other Chinese apps banned in November 2020 were a part of a long list of Chinese apps already banned in India, starting June 2020.
Current Status in India
Snack Video continues to be banned in India, with no indications of the ban being lifted from this platform and other banned Chinese apps. Snack Video had reached over 190 million downloads in India, when it was banned.
