E85-Compliant Yamaha FZ Blue Flex Launched in India at Rs 1.24 Lakh

Yamaha has added a new alternative-fuel option to its popular FZ family with the launch of the FZ Blue Flex in India. Priced at Rs 1,24,240 ex-showroom, Delhi, the motorcycle has been engineered to run on ethanol-blended petrol ranging from E20 to E85. The launch brings flex-fuel technology into the familiar 150cc street-bike category without changing the basic character that has made the FZ range popular among urban riders.

What Makes the FZ Blue Flex Different?

The main highlight is its ability to operate on fuel containing between 20 per cent and 85 per cent ethanol. E85 generally contains up to 85 per cent ethanol, with the remaining portion consisting mainly of petrol. Yamaha has modified the regular FZ engine to support higher ethanol blends while retaining compatibility with the more commonly available E20 fuel.

This flexibility means owners are not restricted to E85 alone. The bike can also use lower ethanol blends, including E20, which makes it more practical while higher-blend fuel infrastructure continues to develop. It gives Yamaha a production-ready platform for a market gradually moving towards more diverse fuel options.

Engine and Performance

The FZ Blue Flex uses a 149cc, air-cooled, fuel-injected, single-cylinder engine paired with a five-speed gearbox. In its flex-fuel form, the motor produces 8.6 kW, equivalent to around 11.7hp, along with 12.8Nm of peak torque. These figures are slightly lower than those of the regular petrol-powered FZ.

For everyday use, the familiar engine layout should continue to suit city traffic, short highway trips and regular commuting. The motorcycle has a kerb weight of 139kg, making it three kilograms heavier than the FZ Rave on which much of its design and hardware are based.

Familiar FZ Design and Equipment

Visually, Yamaha has not taken a radical approach. The FZ Blue Flex retains the muscular fuel tank, faux air vents, compact exhaust, single-piece seat and streetfighter-style bodywork associated with the FZ range. It also receives an LED projector headlamp and a negative LCD instrument console displaying information such as speed, engine rpm, fuel level and trip details.

The cycle parts remain conventional and familiar. The bike gets telescopic front forks, a rear monoshock and 17-inch alloy wheels. Braking duties are handled by a 282mm front disc and 220mm rear disc, supported by single-channel ABS. Its ground clearance, however, is 135mm, which is lower than the 165mm offered by other FZ variants.

Price and Initial Availability

At Rs 1,24,240 ex-showroom, Delhi, the FZ Blue Flex sits in the accessible section of Yamaha’s 150cc portfolio. It is offered in a single variant and Metallic Black colour. Bookings have opened through selected dealerships.

Initial availability is limited to selected Yamaha Blue Square dealerships in Delhi, Uttar Pradesh, Maharashtra, Karnataka, Telangana and Tamil Nadu. Buyers should check local dealership availability, on-road pricing and the ethanol blend available in their area before booking the motorcycle.

Why This Launch Matters

The FZ Blue Flex shows that flex-fuel technology is beginning to move beyond demonstrations and limited prototypes. Instead of developing an entirely unfamiliar motorcycle, Yamaha has introduced the technology through a recognised everyday model.

The motorcycle may not dramatically change the daily riding experience, but its importance lies in offering greater fuel choice. It combines the styling and usability of a regular Yamaha FZ with an engine prepared for petrol containing substantially higher levels of ethanol.
