History

Sol Koffler, the company’s founder, risked everything in 1933 to launch a luggage business in Providence, Rhode Island. Lighter and simpler to pack Hi-Taper luggage was introduced by American Tourister. American Tourister was the first manufacturer to “flight test” their luggage using flight attendants from major airlines during the 1960s travel boom abroad.

The company kept creating hardside products in the 1980s and 90s, but it also adapted to the changing market need for softside cases—strong enough to survive a gorilla, who is known to be a harsh judge of quality. When Samsonite purchased American Tourister in 1993, the two biggest luggage companies in the world came together. With over 90 countries under its belt, the brand is always expanding. Currently, American Tourister is one of the most well-known and reputable baggage brands worldwide.

Brand Philosophy
