Madurai has a reported crime rate of about 206 per lakh persons. Madurai is located in Tamil Nadu, which is the third most developed state in the country.The Crime rate has gone up in Madurai over the years. Madurai is also often referred as the murder capital of the state. The crime rate, however, showed a dip between the year 2013 and 2014. Durg Bhilai nagar is located in the state of Chattisgarh. Its recorded crime rate per lakh population is higher than many Indian cities, according to the 2015 NCRB data. Durg Bhilainagar has a higher crime rate than Mumbai, Ahmadabad, Pune, Kolkata, Chennai and Hyderabad. In the year 2015, Durg Bhilainagar recorded a crime rate of 528.7 per lakh population. 5625 incidences of different kinds of crimes were recorded throughout the year. 84 cases of rape were also reported in the year 2015 while the number of kidnapping cases stood at 205.
7. Nagpur
Nagpur has witnessed a higher crime rate than Mumbai.The Mumbai records more, number of crimes but when it comes to the number of crimes per lakh population, Nagpur overtakes Mumbai. The population of the city has been just 25 lakh which makes the crime record even worse as compared to bigger cities. Nagpur has also emerged as highly unsafe for women with 166 cases of rape and 392 assault cases against women recorded in the year 2015.

The estimated crime rate in the capital of Rajasthan is as high as 597.1 per lakh population. Jaipur is also ahead of many cities in terms of rape and assault on women. In the year 2013, Jaipur reported `192 rape cases which is more than those reported from cities such as Bangalore, Chennai and Hyderabad. Even though the city has reported a decline in the crime rate from the previous year, it is still among the top unsafe cities in India.
5. Gwalior
The crime rate in Gwalior has been estimated to be about 686.1 per lakh persons. The city reported 10,693 cases in the year 2013. The city has also earned the dubious reputation of being one of the most unsafe places for women. In terms of rape, Gwalior has recorded a crime rate of 10.4. The city has also recorded 188 cases of assault against women. Gwalior has been just behind Delhi in terms of the number of reported rape cases and the number of cases per lakh population.
4. Bhopal
The capital of Madhya Pradesh has an estimated crime rate of 719.5 per lakh population. Bhopal consistently features in the list of cities which are considered most unsafe for women. This year the city recorded 133 rape cases with a crime rate of 7.1 and 322 cases of assault on women with a crime rate of 17.1.
3. Indore
The crime rate in this city is very high at 769.1 crimes per lakh population. According to NCRB data, the city recorded 18,463 cases of cognizable offenses in the year 2015. The number of rape, murder and robbery cases showed a decline in the year 2015 as compared to 2014. Indore also consistently features in the top five cities in India, which are considered unsafe for women. Indore also records the highest crime rate in the state of Madhya Pradesh.
2. Kochi
Kochi has an estimated crime rate of 817.9 which is a very high figure. When compared to other cities, this figure appears staggeringly high. Kochi has emerged as one of the most dangerous cities in the country. From 2009 onwards, Kochi recorded a 193% increase in crime. Cheating cases in Kochi also recorded a rate of 26.6.
