The South Indian film industry has given many legendary actors and the level of enthusiasm among the people down south for these movies remains consistently high. The South Indian movies are released in many regional languages such as Tamil, Telugu, Kannada, etc. These movies are also dubbed in Hindi and other for consumption by a wider audience across the country and the world. There is also a constant interaction between the Hindi film industry and the South Indian film industry with many actors from the South appearing in the Bollywood flicks and vice versa. These are the top ten South Indian movies released this year.

Janatha Garage, starring Mohanlal and Jr NTR became the third biggest hit in the history of Telugu film industry. The film has amassed a total income of 138.40 crores with earnings exceeding 60 crores from the Andhra Pradesh and Telangana regions. The movie, directed by Koratala Siva, has been well received by the audience as is evident from the collections. The combination of lead actors, amazing music and a good script can be the reason behind the enormous success of the film.

9. Oopiri/Thoza

Oopiri, starring Nagarjuna and Karthi, has been shot in Paris and Belgrade. Nagarjuna plays the role of a handicapped with inability to move his legs like a matured actor. Karthi also impresses with his perfect portrayal of a street smart guy and his wonderful chemistry with the beautiful Tamannah. The scenes of Paris are wonderful and the music is soothing. The movie has been commercially successful with total earnings of 1 billion rupees worldwide.

This is a comedy film featuring Hansika Motwani, Jiiva and Sibiraj. The film was released on March 2016. The film has received mixed reviews from the audience and has also been criticized for its clumsy execution. Times of India gave it a rating of 3/5 which is not bad at all but many other agencies were not favourable in their ratings. The total box office collection of the movie stood at 6.87 crore rupees.

This is a science fiction thriller based on time travel. Actor Suriya plays a triple role in this movie. Nithya Menen, Samantha Ruth Prabhu and Saranya Ponvannan play the other lead roles. The film has explored the project of time travel with a lot of artistic , but the technicality of the movie and cinematography are impressive. The movie has the potential to keep the audience glued and the action sequence shot in Poland has been appreciated by the audience. The film has amassed a whopping 100 crore worldwide. In its home state of Tamil Nadu, the movie raked in 40 crores.

6. Sardaar Gababar Singh

This is a comedy film directed by K.S. Ravindra and features Pawan Kalyan essaying the role of the policeman Gabbar Singh who takes on the land grabber of Ratanpur played by Sharad Kelkar. Kajal Agarwal impressively played the role of a princess. The movie is replete with fight scenes, dialogues and dances. The movie has been called predictable with no twists and uncertainties and the climax has also failed to impress many. Pawan Kalyan  puts up an energetic performance which has certainly not disappointed his fans. The film showed a drop in its earnings after a good opening weekend and its global collection in ten days reached 90 crore rupees.

The Telugu drama film featuring Mahesh Babu, Kajal Agarwal, Samantha Ruth Prabhu and Prasad V. Potluri in the lead roles revolves around the character of Ajay( Mahesh Babu) and his quest to reunite with his separated family. The film is a blend of emotions, family values and traditions. The film is suitable for families and Mahesh Babu’s performance has been appreciated by the audience. The movie crossed Rs 40 crore in its opening weekend, but could not put up a satisfactory performance.

The action film starring Vijay, Samantha Ruth Prabhu and Amy Jackson was released on 14th April this year. Vijay plays the role of a daredevil cop with lots of violence and fighting scenes. The storyline seems predictable, but Vijay entertains the audience with his effortless bashing up of the goons, romancing with the lady and an impressive portrayal of a loving father. The film is one of revenge, honesty and machoism. The film performed well with a total collection of over Rs 150 crore worldwide. It also did well in Australia, Canada and USA.

3. Sarrainodu

This is a Telugu action film featuring Allu Arjun, Rakul Preet Singh and Catherine Tresa in the lead roles. The film is all about land grabbing of poor farmers, corrupt politicians and their savior in the form Gana(Allu Arjun) who beats up the bad guys and gets them justice. The plot is not impressive enough to back the skills of Allu Arjun. The movie collected over Rs 90 crore at the box office.

The movie, starring Prithviraj Sukumaran, Anoop Menon, Asha Sarath, Miya George, Nedumudi Venu and Maniyan Pilla Raju revolve around two drunkards with shattered lives due to alcoholism who resolve to help another in getting their lives back on track. The movie progresses slowly in the first half, but the second half proves to be the game changer and manages to change the audience response with an impressive climax. The film became a super hit.

1. Kaabali

The biggest super hit of the year starring the legendary actor Rajinikanth in the lead role saw the highest opening collection for any Indian film and managed to beat Salman Khan’s Sultan. Rajnikanth in the role of a don sent his fans into a tizzy and his performance carried the day for the movie. The film amassed an astounding Rs 650 crore with a collection of 48 crore on the first day itself.

These were the performances of the top ten movies from the South Indian film industry, which were highly hyped prior to their release.
