The vegetable production is important since it provides all the essential nutrients necessary for the human beings. It is essential to sustain increased production of vegetables in order to meet the demands of people. The vegetables are the cheapest form of natural food. The vegetables are also used for medical and industrial purposes.

The list top 10 largest vegetable producing states of India are given below.

10. Karnataka

Karnataka is located in the southern part of the India. The number of districts in Karnataka is 30 and the capital of Karnataka is Bangalore. The total area occupied by the state Karnataka is 191,791 km squares. Karnataka produces 25466.8 metric tonnes of vegetables per year. The vegetables produced in Karnataka include sweet potato, tapioca, cauliflower, peas, okra, brinjal, cabbage, potato, tomato, onion and others. Out of these the major vegetable produced by Karnataka is onion, potato.

9. Tamil Nadu

Tamil Nadu is situated in the southern part of India. The total number of districts in Tamil Nadu is 32. The capital of Tamil Nadu of Chennai and the total area covered by the state Tamil Nadu is 130,060 km squares. The vegetables produced in this state include onion, potato, brinjal, cauliflower, sweet potato, okra, cabbage among other vegetables but the most produced vegetable in this state is tapioca.  The production of vegetables in this state is 7897.9 metric ton per year.

8. Maharashtra

Maharashtra is located in the western region of India and the capital of Maharashtra is Mumbai. It has 36 districts in total. The area occupied by the state Maharashtra is 307,703 km square.  The vegetables produced in this state include peas, cauliflower, potato, brinjal, okra, cabbage, tomato among other vegetables. The major vegetable produced in this state is onion which accounts to 58%. The total vegetable productivity of this state is 8008 metric ton per year.

7. Odisha

Odisha is located in the eastern coast of India. The capital of Odisha is Bhubaneswar and it contains a total of 30 districts. The total area covered by Odisha is 155,820 km squares.  The tapioca, potato, sweet onion, onion, peas, okra, cauliflower, cabbage, tomato, brinjal and other vegetables are produced by this state. The brinjal is produced in largest and covers 23% of the production. The total vegetable production of Orissa is 9464 metric ton per year.

6. Gujarat

Gujarat is a state situated at the western part of India and it has a total of 33 districts. The capital of Gujarat is Gandhinagar. The total area covered by Gujarat is 196,024 km square. Cauliflower, onion, cabbage, okra, tomato, brinjal, tomato and other vegetables are produced in this state. Potato is produced in larger amount when compared to other vegetables and covers 24% of production. 10520.7 metric tonnes of vegetables are produced in this state per year.

5. Andhra Pradesh

Andhra Pradesh is located in the south eastern coast of India. The total number of districts present in this state is 13 and the capital of Andhra Pradesh is Hyderabad. The vegetables produced include tapioca, sweet potato, okra, peas, cabbage, cauliflower, brinjal, tomato, potato and others. Tomato is the major vegetable produced in this state accounting to 43%. The total vegetable production of Andhra Pradesh is 12104.7 metric tonnes per year.

4. Madhya Pradesh

Madhya Pradesh is located in the central India.  It is one of the largest states of India with 55 districts the capital of Madhya Pradesh is Indore.  It occupies a vast area of 308,245 Km squares.  The vegetables produced in this state includes the vegetables produced includes onion, sweet potato, okra, peas, cabbage, cauliflower, brinjal, tomato, potato and others. The 21% of the vegetable produced is onion making it as a major crop. The vegetable production in this state is 125724 metric tonnes per year.

3. Bihar

Bihar is a state located in the eastern part of India. The state Bihar contains 38 districts in total and the capital of Bihar is Patna.  The total area covered by this state is 94,163 km square. Sweet potato, peas, cabbage, okra, onion, tomato, cauliflower, brinjal, potato and other vegetables are produced is this state. Potato is the major vegetable produced in this state as it is occupies 41% in the production of vegetables. The total productivity of vegetables in this state is 16325.7 metric tonnes per year.

2. Uttar Pradesh

Uttar Pradesh is the most populous state in India and it is abbreviated as UP.  The number of districts in this state is 75. The area covered by this district is quite large. The vegetables produced in this states are potato, cabbage, brinjal, okra, cauliflower, sweet potato, onion, peas among the other vegetables. The 78% of vegetable produced is potato in this state. It is the largest potato producing states in India.  The total vegetable production in this state is 19571.6 metric tonnes per year.

West Bengal is located in east India on the Bay of Bengal and it is the fourth most populous state. It is the second largest state in production of potatoes. It has 20 districts and the capital of West Bengal is Kolkata. The total vegetable productivity in this state is 25466.8 metric tonnes per year. Some of the vegetable produced includes sweet potato, onion, cabbage, peas, cauliflower, etc.
