Top 10 Largest States of India by Population Density

India is the second most populous country in the world, right after People’s Republic of China, with 2.4% of the world area occupied by it and 17.5% of world population residing here. The population of India has already surpassed the tumultuous figure of 1 billion, as per the census of 2011. The country is divided into 29 states and 7 union territories, with population being distributed unequally in these states and some of them being more densely populated than others.

10. Goa

The state of Goa scores as number 10 amongst the most densely populated states in India, with a density of 393.8 per sq km. The conducive weather along with excellent economic and tourism opportunities makes the state an attractive place to live in.

9. Assam

Sitting on the number 9 spot with in this list, with the population density of 396.8 per sq km is the north eastern state of Assam, which is high on economic development index as well as lesser in area, and these reasons account for its high population density.

8. Jharkhand

The next name in the list of top 10 largest states of India by population density is that of Jharkhand, which has a population density of 441.5 per sq km. The abundance of natural resources and high rate of industrialization, in this state accounts for an increase in the number of people willing to settle here.

7. Punjab

With the population density just over 550 per sq km, Punjab figures on number 7 in this list. It is an economically prosperous state, with a high standard of living and excellence in industrial and infrastructural development.

6. Tamil Nadu

Tamil Nadu is the sixth most densely populated state in India, with its population density touching 554.7 per sq km. Tamil Nadu boasts of great climatic conditions as well as good living opportunities, which makes it a preferable place to live in.
