Top 10 Largest Onion Producing States of India 2017

India is a land of diverse culture, tradition, languages and nonetheless irrigation practices. However, agriculture sector in India plays a significant role in improvising the country GDP as compared to another sector. In India there are mainly three seasons for Onion viz. Rabi (March-June), Kharif (October-December) and Late Kharif (January-March). Among this three season Rabi season onion holds a major part of onion producing in India i.e. 60-65% of the total onion production. Mainly Ravi season onion is made available till October-November and also steadily available for both purpose domestic as well as for export market.

There are many states in India which engaged in Onion agriculture among them the major top 10 Onion producing states in India (Estimation by the government portal) are as follows:

10. TAMIL NADU

Tamil Nadu has been the state which always acquired the position of 10th as a largest onion producing states in India. Tamil Nadu has 37.7 (000’ hectares) area of land under the cultivation of onion and it has production marginality of about 429.72 (000 tonnes). The state is yielding about 11398 Kg/Ha every year. Onion produced by the state may not be exported all the time, but they produce for self-consumption as well as made available for domestic purpose.

9. UTTAR PRADESH

Uttar Pradesh the next in our list acquires the 9th position in major onion producing states in India. State under the leadership of AkhileshYadav have shown some magnificent changes in the state agriculture practice. The state has 26.6 (000’Ha) area under the cultivation of onion which have the total production of about 474.01 (000’tonnes) in a year with an average yield of 17820 Kg/Ha.

8. RAJASTHAN

Rajasthan also have moved up and playing a key role as far as production of Onion in India is concerned. The state mainly deals in producing late kharif season onion as a result of which is having a production of 4760.21 (000’tonnes) of onion under the area of 139.1 (000’Hectares) of land. The state has an average yield per year of about 3422 Kg/Ha.

7. HARYANA

Haryana is the state where more than 80% of the population are engaged in agriculture sector and have the majority of the land under cultivation of various crops among them onion is the one. The state has 27.8 (000’hectares) of land under the cultivation of onion with the productivity of about 604.47 (000’tonnes) in a year. The state mainly focuses on producing wheat, but though it has a yield of 21744 Kg/Ha of onion in a year.

6. ANDHRA PRADESH

Andhra Pradesh due to political interference has lost its parts of the share in onion production. Now, the state is producing onion in the area of 66.1 (000 hectare) of land which has a production of near about 1002.1 (000 tonnes). The state,though divided in two parts, but the state still is in top 10 onion producing states in the country. The state has the year yield of about 15160 Kg/Ha.

5. BIHAR

Bihar also where the majority of the people has engaged themselves agriculture practices. The state provides various facilities in order to improve the present agriculture structure, as a result which the state acquire the 5th position in our list of major onion producing states in India. The state has 54.32 (000 hectares) area of land under the cultivation of onion with the production of about 1304.15 (000 tonnes) per year. The state has an average yield of about 24008 Kg/HA.

4. GUJARAT

The next state in our list is Gujarat. The state due to availability of suitable climate, soil, and area for the cultivation of onion have helped them to acquire the 4th position. The state mainly deals in producing the Rabi season. The state has an area of 72.6 (000 hectares) with the production of 1858 (000 tonnes) during each season approximately. With the limited land the state has yielded a capacity of 25,592 Kg/Ha.

3. MADHYA PRADESH

Madhya Pradesh is the heart of India. The state acquires the 3rd position and contributing spontaneously in the India’s economic growth. The state plays a crucial role in onion producing states in India with the total land available for cultivation of onion is 117.31 (000 hectares). The average production of onion in the state is 2826 (000 tonnes) per year, which result in overwhelming the yielding of onion i.e. 24,090 Kg/Ha .

2. KARNATAKA

The state is located near the Eastern Ghat and close to the Bay of Bengal. The state with the accommodation of familiar climate and suitability of soil has made the state as the perfect land for the cultivation of onion. The onion is either consumed for the domestic purpose or for making trade in the international market. The onion is of standard quality which are produced in the area of 164.30 (000 hectares) with a production of about 2466.40 (000 tonnes). The state yielding capacity is 15,011 Kg/Ha per year.

1. MAHARASHTRA

The state located near the Arabian sea, which provide climate during March-June which is the best suitable climate for the cultivation of onion. The state accounts for the majority of the share as far as onion production is concerned. The state covers an area of 468 (000 hectares) with an average production of 5867 (000 tonnes) per year. The state also has an average yield of 14,667 Kg/Ha per year.

So above mentioned states are the Onion producing states which export the onion to different countries of the world and alo meet the nation requirement too.

    Mr Santosh Kumar U have given list of top 10 onion producers in the country in reverse order, which is highly objectionable since matter is not listed chronologically. But just to make TN position on top u have made, do u think will this way picture of onion cultivation will change. U also give information on source of this information
