Sabyasachi Mukherjee was born in Kolkata and hails from a middle class family. His mother loved handicrafts and worked at the Government Art College, while the family went into trouble when his father lost his job at the time when Sabyasachi was just 15 years old. Though he is one of the leading fashion designers of the country today, it is surprising to learn that his parents did not even pay for his admission fee at NIFT. The reason was that they wanted him to go in engineering field, but Sabyasachi was bent at becoming a designer and sold his books to get admission to the institute and the rest is history. He completed his graduation from NIFT with three awards and opened his workshop as a designer. He has a deep interest in food culture of international destinations and wants to be a food show host and writer.

Sabyasachi Mukherjee started his label “Sabyasachi” as he was fresh out of NIFT in 1999. With just three people in his workshop to become one of the leading brands today, which is not only a commercial hit but also serves a social cause. He was awarded the Most Outstanding Young designer from India Award by Femina British Council in 2001, along with an internship in London, working under the mentorship of the famous designer Georgina von Etzdorf. As he came back to India, Sabyasachi started retailing his label at the big store of the country. He also participated in the India fashion week and Lakme Fashion Week and received rave reviews. His first international show came in 2003, with the Grand Winner Award at the Mercedes Benz New Asia Fashion Week in Singapore. Sabyasachi popularized traditional hand embroideries like Kantha in his work and revived these designs in the country. His designs have been featured at the Milan Fashion Week, making him to only Indian to have received this honor. He is also the only Indian designer ti have participated in the fashion weeks of Milan, London and New York. He has also designed costumes for some big Bollywood movies such as “Babul”, “Guzarish”, “Raavan” and “Laaga Chunari Mein Daag”. He has many accolades to his name, including being the youngest member on the board of National Museum of Indian Cinema and one of the Associate Members of the Fashion Design Council of India.
